If you’ve ever lived through a summer in New Jersey, you already know that temperatures can rise very quickly. Heat exhaustion or a heat stroke can occur with little warning, especially in young children and older men and women. If you’re enjoying a day in the sun and you believe that someone you love is suffering from a heat stroke, here’s what to do.
Know the Symptoms
Familiarize yourself with the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke before the summer season. Some of the most common symptoms of heatstroke include muscle cramps, weakness, confusion, dizziness, and a body temperature above 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
Move the Person Into a Cool Area
If you start to notice the symptoms of heatstroke setting in, immediately move the person out of the sun and into a cool, shaded area. If you’re home, you should turn on your air conditioning system as soon as you’re indoors. If you’re still waiting to receive an AC repair in Toms River, NJ, use a cool, damp towel to lower the person’s body temperature.
Encourage Them to Drink Water
Encourage the person to drink a cool beverage, preferably a sports drink or bottle of water. Do not allow the person to consume any beverage containing alcohol or caffeine, as these are likely to cause further dehydration.
Know When to Call for Help
Call 911 immediately if the person suffering from a heat stroke goes into shock, suffers a seizure, or if their body temperature doesn’t fall below 103 degrees in 30 minutes or less. If the person stops breathing, call for help, and begin CPR as soon as possible. Is your home feeling hotter than usual this summer?
