How Heat Pumps Work in the New Jersey Climate
A heat pump moves heat rather than generating it. In summer, the system compresses refrigerant to pull heat from indoor air and push it outside. In winter, a component called the reversing valve reverses the refrigeration cycle, extracting heat from the outdoor air and delivering it into your home. One system handles both seasons.
In Toms River, winter temperatures can reach 5 degrees Fahrenheit. As outdoor temperatures fall into the low-to-mid 30s, a heat pump’s heating efficiency decreases. At that point, auxiliary electric strip heat in the air handler activates automatically to supplement output. A properly sized heat pump, paired with appropriate backup heat, can handle the full seasonal range, from summer highs around 92 degrees down through a typical mid-Atlantic winter.
Heat pumps deliver warmth at a lower air temperature than gas heat, which some homeowners notice as a difference in feel. The system still maintains comfortable indoor temperatures through the full heating cycle. For homes with low crawl spaces or where a standard split configuration isn’t practical, package units combine the heating and cooling components in a single outdoor cabinet and are worth considering during the system selection process.
When a Heat Pump Makes Sense for Your Home
For homeowners without access to natural gas, a heat pump is typically far more efficient and less expensive to operate than electric baseboard heat. Homes already connected to natural gas require a different comparison, since per-BTU costs vary by fuel source. A dual-fuel or hybrid system, which pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace, is one solution: the heat pump handles the shoulder seasons efficiently, and the furnace takes over when outdoor temperatures drop below the heat pump’s efficient operating range.

Answering Your Most Important Questions

-
Can a heat pump handle New Jersey winters?
Modern heat pumps are designed for cold climates, but heating efficiency decreases as outdoor temperatures fall into the low 30s Fahrenheit. Most systems installed in New Jersey include auxiliary electric strip heat that activates automatically when needed. Dual-fuel systems pair a heat pump with a gas furnace for homes on natural gas, switching to gas when conditions warrant. A properly sized system with appropriate backup heat can keep your Ocean County home comfortable all winter.
-
How often does a heat pump need to be serviced?
Because heat pumps run year-round for both heating and cooling, they accumulate more operating hours than a seasonal system. Annual maintenance is the standard minimum; many technicians recommend service twice a year, once before the cooling season and once before heating season. Typical tasks include cleaning coils, checking refrigerant levels, inspecting electrical connections, and verifying the reversing valve and auxiliary heat are functioning correctly. With proper care, heat pumps typically last 15 to 20 years.
-
What’s the difference between a heat pump and a standard air conditioner?
A standard air conditioner removes heat from your home in summer but provides no heating. A heat pump does the same in summer, then uses a reversing valve to run the refrigeration cycle in reverse during winter, extracting heat from outdoor air and delivering it inside. Because it handles both functions, a heat pump replaces two separate systems, a furnace or boiler and an air conditioner, with one unit.
-
Are there rebates available for heat pump installations in Toms River?
Care Temp, LLC is a designated NJNG preferred contractor, which may simplify the rebate process for qualifying installations. NJNG offers rebates for qualifying air-source heat pump installations meeting specified efficiency ratings, with equipment installed by June 30, 2027; the rebate amount varies depending on equipment type and whether the installation is part of a bundled upgrade. Homeowners must be NJNG residential customers in a non-new-construction home. The federal Inflation Reduction Act’s 25C tax credit for heat pump installations expired December 31, 2025 and is no longer available for new installs. Confirm current eligibility terms with NJNG and a tax advisor before relying on specific figures.

I want to THANK CARE TEMP for helping me during this 115 degree heat wave. I had no AC and my house was 98 degrees. Some community members recommended DK SLEDZAK, BERGE HVAC and CARE TEMP. Care Temp was the ONLY company that answered the phone during the holiday heat wave and sent a tech out that day to fix my AC. Care Temp gained a new customer and it has been 1 week and still no return phone call back from the other companies. THANK YOU CARE TEMP for your help and for caring for us old people!!!! I will dKim Blum

I live in Whiting and I called Care Temp because my AC was not working. I spoke with the office and immediately was given an appointment. Since my ac is old, I didn't want to take any more chances of it not working during the summer time so I asked the tech for a price to replace it. I did call 2 more local companies for a quote but Sledzik never showed up and when I called the office, the lady was rude and told me that I did not have an appointment and when I gave the name of who I spoke to, she told me thMarilyn Sartucci
